Nicolò Bambini
St. James the Less

1722-23
Church of San Stae, Venice

The painting illustrates an episode in the Golden Legend: James had vowed that he would not eat until the Resurrection of Christ. When that happened, Christ appeared to him bringing a loaf of bread.

Christ's swirling garments and the burst of light behind him are borrowed from Renaissance conventions in the portrayal of the Resurrection (example).
